Vo Ngoc Thach
Abstract
Retrocaval Ureter or Preureteral Vena Cava
or Circumcaval Ureter is a rare congenital abnormality in which ureter is lie
behind the Vena cava, causing obstruction which leads to hydronephrosis and
lumbar pain. It occurs as a consequence of the persistence of the subcardinal
vein during embryologic development. Intravenous urography, retrograd
pyelography are main diagnostic investigations. Today, CTscan with using three-
dimensional imaging may be the procedure of choice to confirm the diagnosis and
avoid retrograd ureteropyelography. Surgical intervension is requied in most of
cases.
We present two cases of Preureteral Vena Cava which diagnosis was
confirmed by UIV and Ctscan. Open surgical managent was performed.
Postoperative recovery was uneventful.
